As a double-board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon in Birmingham, AL, I often encounter patients seeking effective treatments for hair loss. Based on my experience in hair restoration and weighing the available evidence-based medicine, here’s a rundown of the best available options, from least effective to most effective:
For patients seeking Hair Restoration, I start by ensuring they eat a balanced diet, implement healthy sleep patterns, and optimize any chronic medical conditions (e.g., Diabetes, Thyroid disease, Autoimmune disorders, Chronic Skin Conditions, etc.). I also recommend supplements like Nutrafol and Viviscal. These supplements contain vitamins, minerals, and other ingredients that support hair health (i.e., Biotin, Saw Palmetto, Collagen, etc.). While they are not as potent as prescription medications, they can be a safe and valuable part of a comprehensive hair restoration plan.
In my Birmingham hair restoration practice, I recommend ketoconazole shampoo for patients dealing with scalp inflammation and dandruff, which can contribute to hair loss. I suggest using a prescription strength 2% concentration shampoo 2-3 times weekly. While Ketoconazole shampoo helps with scalp health, it’s generally less effective for significant hair regrowth.
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
For those looking for non-invasive options, LLLT can be a consideration. For these at-home devices to be effective, however, they require sessions usually lasting 15-30 minutes, 2-3 times per week. In short, LLLT stimulates hair follicles and promotes hair growth, with results visible in a few months. However, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is mixed, so I advise patients to manage their expectations.
Stem Cell Injection with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
PRP therapy involves harnessing the pro-inflammatory cells from your blood and injecting them back into the scalp over multiple sessions, typically 4 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. In our Birmingham office, I inject PRP into the scalp to stimulate hair follicles, improving their health and ultimately creating a healthier head of hair. This method shows promise, with results visible in a few months, but its effectiveness can vary among individuals.
Minoxidil
Minoxidil is a widely used topical treatment in 2% and 5% concentrations. I recommend applying topical foam or serum therapy directly to the scalp twice daily, with the 5% concentration showing more significant results. For patients less keen on a topical product, oral Minoxidil is also an option, requiring a 5 mg tablet to be taken daily. Patients usually notice hair regrowth within 3-6 months. In short, Minoxidil (oral or topical) represents a solid hair restoration option with a strong evidence base but does require continued use to see and maintain results.
Finasteride
For male patients, I often prescribe oral Finasteride, typically 1 mg daily. This oral tablet is effective in about 80% of men, reducing hair loss and promoting regrowth within 3-6 months. It’s highly effective and well-supported by evidence, with an extremely high safety profile.
Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair transplant surgery is the most effective option for those seeking a more permanent solution. This one-time procedure, though sometimes requiring multiple sessions, provides natural-looking hair growth. It’s the gold standard for significant hair restoration, but it has associated downtime and financial implications.
Conclusion
Overall, the key to effective hair restoration is combining treatments, such as routine minoxidil, finasteride, and stem cell (PRP) injections, enhancing overall efficacy. Consistency is also key to seeing results, and I always emphasize the importance of regular follow-ups to monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
